Before becoming one of the biggest analysts in the sport, Teddy Atlas had plenty of success as a boxing trainer.
Atlas initially worked as an assistant trainer to legendary coach Cus D’Amato, before he then began to train fighters on his own. He was in the corner for a number of world champions, including Mike Tyson, Michael Moorer, Barry McGuigan and Tim Bradley.
All in all, Atlas worked with 18 world champions throughout his career as a trainer, and he revealed to Ring that out of all of them he deemed ‘Iron Mike’ to have had the best chin.
“Tyson had a tremendous chin and he had a helluva neck for shock absorbers. His neck was close to 20 inches. If you trace his career, he didn’t disappear straight away. He took those shots.
“What wasn’t strong was his will; that’s what cracked. His will cracked before his chin. He absorbed those punches and he took big punches before he got knocked out. He showed a chin to handle those punches at a very high level. His will wasn’t nearly as strong as his chin.”
Former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson ended his career with 50 wins, 7 defeats and 2 no contests, though five of those defeats came by knockout, with it clear that Atlas believes that it down to his will rather than his chin.
Following his training career, Atlas now serves as a key analyst for the sport who regularly weighs in on some of the key topics, and he recently gave his opinion on the upcoming Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis exhibition.
