Teddy Atlas has shared his verdict on whether Jake Paul can go on to win a world title.
The YouTuber-turned-boxer made his return to the ring last Saturday night when he defeated Mexico’s former WBC world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Anaheim, California.
It was a dominant performance from ‘The Problem Child’ as he comprehensively outpointed the 39-year-old from Culiacan to make it twelve professional wins in thirteen outings since his professional debut half a decade ago.
Legendary trainer-turned-analyst Atlas has spoken out in the aftermath of Paul’s victory over Chavez and shared his thoughts on whether he believes the 28-year-old from Cleveland could land himself a world title shot in the near future.
Speaking on his YouTube channel THE FIGHT, Atlas admitted that he believes Paul should be pursuing a bout against WBC world cruiserweight champion Badou Jack, who appears to be entering the final chapter of his career and could be the 28-year-old’s best opportunity at becoming a world champion, Atlas believes he ‘has a shot’ against the 41 year-old.
“I think the best spot that he would probably look to pick if he wants a real title fight would probably be Badou Jack who’s 42-years-old, he’s a world champion he’s got a real belt. That might be his best spot to navigate, to manoeuvre enough with young legs, to have a shot there unless he wants to go to another event.
He’s talking about Joshua, I don’t know if that stuff’s real, he’s throwing these names around, he is Barnum and Bailey, give him credit, he’s Barnum and Bailey, he’s an entertainer, he’s a promoter, give him credit for what he’s done, and he does take risk, there’s still a level of risk, it’s just that it’s in his favour, he’s earned that, he’s earned the right to have it in his favour.”
Paul made a callout to Jack just moments after he was declared the winner over Chavez, and promoter Eddie Hearn also believes that’s the fight that should be made.
