Terence Crawford makes his debut at super-welterweight this weekend, facing WBA Champion Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles.
A win would made ‘Bud’ a four-division titlist – undisputed in two – and likely cement his status as the pound-for-pound number one fighter in the eyes of many.
As one of the best in the world, there’s a list of challengers queueing up to take what’s his, most notably Jaron Ennis. Philadelphia’s ‘Boots’ was elevated to IBF Welterweight World Champion with Crawford’s decision to move up but, not content with just having his old belt, he won’t rest until he gets the fight against him.
Avanesyan’s team have a unique insight into one of the most intriguing match-ups in the sport then, and his trainer, Carl Greaves, broke it down in an interview with Boxing Scene.
“Boots Ennis is the more busy, more active fighter in my opinion. He’s a bit younger and a bit fresher. On the other hand, Crawford is very, very patient. His timing is very good and he plans just the right attacks at just the right times whereas Ennis was more busy.
I think that Crawford is a heavier handed fighter. I was talking to David and he said that Crawford hits harder but that ‘Boots’ Ennis was a bit sharper and busier. Then you take into consideration that when David fought Crawford, the whole six rounds he was in there with him he had dodgy gloves. When he [Avanesyan] came out of the ring afterwards he said he’d never had pain or lumps on his head like it.”
Greaves said Crawford has the edge in ring IQ and adaptability but believes there’s more to come from the younger ‘Boots’. He then revealed who Avanesyan himself favours to win the fight should it happen.
“In a nutshell – and after speaking to David – he thinks Crawford would beat Boots Ennis.”
If ‘Bud’ can beat Madrimov this weekend he will continue to chase a fight with super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, with an offer ready to be made by Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh. If it’s not excepted, the Saudi businessman has said he wants to bring Ennis to 154 and make that fight happen instead.
