Terence Crawford has landed a fight with Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez later this year, and Marco Antonio Barrera sees a clear winner.
Canelo was once dismissive of the match-up, previously stating that he would get no credit for beating a smaller man. He has largely dominated the super-middleweight ranks for the past five years, only suffering his two career losses at different weights.
Crawford will enter the ring undefeated and considered by many to be the best fighter, pound-for-pound, in the sport of boxing. Like Canelo, he is also a four-weight world champion.
Barrera was no stranger to moving divisions, having won championships at super-bantam, feather and featherweight during his 22-year long campaign. The Hall of Famer is widely considered a true Mexican great, undoubtedly joined by Canelo when he decides to call time on his career.
Asked about the potential fight between his countryman and Crawford in May of last year, Barrera had a simple answer giving the American little chance.
“No, he’s small.”
Three months after that interview, Crawford made his debut at super-welterweight, beating Israil Madrimov to become champion in his fourth division and closing the gap slightly between himself and Canelo when it comes to bulk.
He will still have to jump up two classes for the clash in September, something he is extremely confident in being able to handle but has been warned by others in the sport that it will be too tall a task.
