Conor Benn is soon to fight Regis Prograis and former champion Barry McGuigan has given his view on the fight.

Benn made headlines once again recently when he announced he had left his long-time promotional partner, Matchroom, and moved over to Dana White’s newly formed Zuffa Boxing for a reported $15m fee for just one fight.

That fight is against ageing former champion Prograis, who has a fight of the year contender with Josh Taylor in 2019 for the IBF The Ring light-welterweight, and since then has lost to Jack Catterall and Devin Haney, though beat Joseph Diaz back in August.

Benn, meanwhile, fought twice last year, first to a points loss to his generational rival Chris Eubank Jr, then he reversed the result with a fine display against what looked to be a weight-drained Eubank six months later.

Speaking to Boxing King Media, McGuigan gave his breakdown of the contest.

“It’s a great fight. It’s a relatively easy fight given that Regis has had success as a light welterweight. Even then, he was getting a bit tired and sort of falling off the top. To go in at welterweight against a young, aggressive and still full of vigour Conor Benn, it’s a tough fight for him. He should still win that.

“I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get Regis out of there. Great money. I feel a bit bad for Eddie after all the effort and money that he put into him.”

Benn has said he is keen to win his first world title sooner rather than later, so a win against Prograis on Tyson Fury’s undercard in April is a must.
