Barry McGuigan thinks Tyson Fury must be honest with himself as he prepares to return to the ring once more.
Fury has had a number of short-lived retirements over the course of his career. The first came after his epic first world title win on away soil against Wladimir Klitschko back in 2015.
After he defeated the long-ruling Ukrainian champion and picked up three unified titles, he took time out and battled with addiction problems and mental health demons, but eventually made a successful comeback.
He defeated Deontay Wilder to become WBC champion and then twice shared the ring with Oleksandr Usyk in an attempt to become the undisputed ruler of the division.
When he lost both in 2024, he stepped away from the sport for more than a year but is now back in training and ready to have one last throw of the dice as he approaches 40.
Writing in The Mirror, boxing legend McGuigan thinks ‘The Gypsy King’ must ask himself some tough questions before stepping back into the ring in earnest.
“So this latest comeback, like the others, is about commitment. Does he want to bite down on that gum shield and get himself out of trouble, to drag it up from the sole of his boots to prevail?
“Nothing is certain with Fury. He is a mercurial, emotional character. He’s a great fighter who has achieved so much. He obviously misses the game, the roar of the crowd, the attention. But does he miss getting smacked about the head and body when he’s out on his feet? That’s the question.”
We will only find out once the first bell sounds on his return. Right now, he is being linked with several fighters, including American Brandon Moore.
