Tony Bellew thinks one man remains more destructive than all of the others in the heavyweight division.
There has been plenty of change at the top in the last few years. For much of the last decade, it has been Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder that dominated and held all of the belts.
But in 2018, Oleksandr Usyk crashed the division having cleaned out the cruiserweights and become undisputed. He did the same in the banner division by twice beating Fury, Joshua and also Daniel Dubois and is the only man to be a two-time undisputed heavyweight ruler in the four-belt era.
Right now, Fury is retired but has been talking about his hopes for a trilogy with Usyk, Wilder has fought just once in more than a year and Joshua hasn’t been in action since he was stopped last September by Dubois.
Despite all of that, former WBC cruiserweight world champion Bellew still has a lot of praise for one of those men, as speaking to the Football Blog, he thew his weight behind Joshua who he says is still one of the best heavyweights in the game right now.
“The speed alone of Anthony Joshua, when he lets his hands go. He doesn’t want to overthink things. He’s the most destructive heavyweight in the world, but he’s just got to let his hands go.”
Joshua has only a small widow to prove Bellew’s theory once more as he nears 40 and the end of his career. He is expected back in action in early 2026, though will not immediately be in a huge fight as he looks to build momentum and work towards a possible showdown with Fury.
