Tony Bellew has offered insight into the second fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn.
After a period of uncertainty as to whether or not it will happen, the rematch between the two long-term rivals is now officially on for November this year. It is the latest installment in a saga that has gone on since October 2022, when they were first due to fight, but Benn failed a drugs test late in the day, so the fight was pulled.
The rematch comes seven months after the first fight finally happened, which left both men recovering in the hospital following a brutal 12-round war where they gave everything. Benn started better, but it was the experience and natural size advantage of Eubank that eventually told and saw him take a unanimous points win on the cards.
Benn will again go up in weight for the rematch, though Eubank will again be hampered by a restrictive rehydration clause on the day of the fight, which is something his father has always been hugely against.
Speaking to Sporting Talk, former cruiserweight world champion Bellew thinks the quicker the match happens the better it is for Benn as the younger man.
“I said this straight away from the first fight. He’s got to get back in the ring as soon as he can with Chris Eubank Jr. The quick turnaround favours Conor Benn. It takes a long time to recover from a fight like that for someone of Chris Eubank’s age, and that’s just the way it is.”
