David Benavidez returns to action this weekend.

‘The Mexican Monster’ looks to cement his status as one of the best 175lb fighters on the planet when he takes on WBA regular light heavyweight champion David Morrell in Las Vegas.

It’s the second fight for Benavidez at light heavyweight, having won the interim WBC belt with a unanimous decision victory over Oleksandr Gvozdyk back in June.

The move to 175lbs came after Benavidez had been a two-time super-middleweight champion, but it seems he isn’t content with just staying at light heavyweight, after it was revealed he would also be willing to move up to cruiserweight.

Despite having ambitions to also become world champion at cruiserweight, Benavidez has admitted that there is one current world champion he isn’t ready for, telling Fighthype that he wouldn’t want to face current unified heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk.

“To be honest with you I have to deal with these monsters in this weight class first.

Usyk? I don’t think I have enough experience to go up against Usyk. I’m just being 100% honest, but like you say never say never!”

Usyk has made it known that he is interested in moving back down to cruiserweight in the future, the division where he first became undisputed in 2018 before repeating the feat at heavyweight last year.

It means a bout between Usyk and Benavidez isn’t beyond the wildest realms of possibility, but a more likely next option for the ‘Mexican Monster’ could be a clash against the winner of the undisputed light heavyweight title rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
