David Benavidez and David Morrell put on a sensational battle over 12 hard-fought rounds.
The two men were competing at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Benavidez bringing his WBC interim light-heavyweight title into the bout, while Morrell’s WBA regular belt at 175lbs was also up for grabs.
Both fighters were undefeated heading into the fight, and it was an action-packed non-stop war throughout the entire contest, with Benavidez getting the better of the majority of the rounds as the fight progressed.
Morrell did manage to score a knockdown in the 11th round, but was also deducted a point after punching Benavidez after the bell.
Despite the late drama, Benavidez wasn’t in any real danger, as he saw out the bout and claimed the unanimous decision victory, with the judges scoring it 115-111, 115-111 and 118-108 in his favour, as he extended his unbeaten record to 30-0.
It didn’t take ‘The Mexican Monster’ long to reveal what his next target was, after announcing that he now has his sights firmly set on facing the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol winner on February 22.
“I just want to be the best of my era. I want to unify all four titles.”
Beterbiev and Bivol meet again later this month after their first clash back in October, where Beterbiev claimed a majority decision victory to become undisputed at 175lbs.
Benavidez is expected to be ringside in Saudi Arabia to witness the rematch between Beterbiev and Bivol, and he has already revealed how he expects the second fight to play out.
