David Benavidez will be a keen observer of the rematch between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

The light-heavyweight greats first did battle for undisputed honours in October and after a close and engaging fight, it was Beterbiev who got the nod on points to retain his 100 % win record, although he was taken the 12-round distance for the first time in his career.

Since then, Bivol has requested a rematch and the IBF has stated they are open to allowing that to happen rather than forcing Beterbiev to make a mandatory defence of his title against Michael Eifert.

Benavidez is a former two-time super middleweight champion who moved up to light heavyweight and claimed the WBC interim title and is now pursuing a fight with the winner should these two elite fighters go at it once again in 2025.

Speaking to ESNEWS, the 27-year-old was asked how he sees the second fight going and backed Bivol, who he feels should have won the initial encounter, to take it.

“It’s going to be a throwback fight and that’s what we all expect to see … if it’s the same as the last fight I see Bivol winning again unless they rob him and then there’s nothing really he can do.”

Benavidez beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his first fight up at light heavyweight back in June and is now set to face WBA regular light-heavyweight title holder David Morrell on February 1 2025 in an excellent match-up.

‘The Monster’ was asked if he thinks a fight with the winner of Beterbiev and Bivol would be next after that.

“To be honest with you I don’t see nothing getting in the way of this fight cause I have the WBC interim, Morrell has one of the world [titles], so getting that belt, there’s nothing that could stop me getting that fight cause I rightfully earned the shot from winning both belts.”

It has been rumoured that the rematch could take place on Riyadh Season’s February 22 card.
