David Benavidez has wanted a fight with Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez for some time, and has now spoken on what would happen were the Mexican to fight Terence Crawford.

‘Canelo’ and Crawford are two of the best currently active boxers in the world. Canelo has been an undisputed champion in the super middleweight divisions as well as holding belts at middleweight and light heavyweight.

He has fought more than 50 times and lost just twice – early on to Floyd Mayweather, and back in 2022 when he stepped up to light heavyweight to take on Dmitry Bivol.

American Crawford has not yet lost in the ring and has been the undisputed lightweight king as well as undisputed welterweight ruler after he beat Errol Spence Jr back in the summer of 2023.

He has now moved up to 154lbs and become a world champion after winning his first fight at the weight back in August 2024, and now the world awaits his next move.

Light heavyweight contender Benavidez had plenty of praise for Crawford but cautioned against moving up too far, saying ‘weight classes must be respected’ and so gives Canelo the edge in the fight.

“To be honest with you, Crawford is one of the best technical fighters I have ever seen. When he went to 154, I’m not saying he had problems, but he looked like he didn’t have the power he had at 147, and he’d still have to come up two or there weights classes. Crawford is a one-of-a-kind fighter but weight classes must be respected.

I’d give Canelo the edge.”

Weight is the big issue that could keep these two greats from coming together in the ring, with ‘Canelo’ being the naturally much bigger man. Right now, neither man has their next fight locked in so speculation continues.
