WBC light-heavyweight champion David Benavidez has shared his thoughts on Terence Crawford’s stunning performance against Canelo Alvarez.
‘Bud’ Crawford entered the boxing history books once again earlier this month as he dethroned Mexican icon Canelo of his undisputed super-middleweight championship at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The three judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 116-112 and 115-113 in favour of Crawford, who set a blistering tempo from the outset which Canelo ultimately failed to match on fight night.
The 37-year-old from Omaha has received heaps of praise for putting on arguably the best performance of his professional career to date, becoming the first male fighter in the history of boxing to win an undisputed championship in three separate weight classes.
Speaking to DAZN Boxing, unbeaten world champion Benavidez gave his countryman praise for his outstanding performance against Canelo, saying he now goes down as ‘one of the greats’.
“I want to give Terence Crawford a great congratulations, he’s reached in the history of the sport what very few do. He’s one of the greatest of all time. Not only did he go up three weight classes, but he beat one of the best fighters of his generation, I don’t remember ever in history that someone has come up from 147lbs and won the super-middleweight world championship. Not only is he a great fighter but you could tell from that fight just how much of a dog he is.”
Now a world champion in five weight classes, rumours have began to circulate about what route ‘Bud’ could take next, with reports suggesting that he could actually make a move down to 160lbs to challenge unified WBO and IBF world middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly next.
As for Canelo, the 35-year-old from Guadalajara is expected to fulfil his four-fight contract with Riyadh Season and could make his return to the ring in the early stages of 2026, although it has been argued that the two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion could choose to retire from the sport instead.
