A showdown between David Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez is still yet to happen after years of fans demanding it.

The 28-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona has targeted a fight against Mexican icon Canelo since becoming mandatory challenger to his WBC super middleweight title back in 2023, but Alvarez isn’t too keen on facing the two-time world champion.

Speaking to The Ring Magazine, Canelo was asked why he believes a fight with Benavidez is still up in the air, and he said he does not respect how ‘The Monster’ approached the situation.

“When somebody approach you like that, and call you out like that, you don’t need to give them money. Like I say, I can do whatever I want. I just don’t like the way he approaches taking the fight.”

Benavidez has since responded to the claims made by the Mexican superstar, revealing in the post-fight press conference after his recent victory over David Morrell that he still wants the Canelo fight and joked about having to ‘work on his attitude’ towards his potential future opponent.

“I would love to fight Canelo, it would be a massive, massive fight but Canelo says he has other things and he says I’m being too mean, and the way I’m approaching him so I guess I gotta work on my attitude.”

Benavidez retained his WBC ‘Interim’ light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Morrell on February 1 as well as adding the WBA Regular belt. It puts him in prime position to face the winner of the undisputed rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol later this month.

As for Canelo, he faces William Scull in May in his own undisputed bout before Terence Crawford in September.
