David Benavidez has revealed details of a conversation he recently had with Turki Alalshikh about a potential clash with Canelo Alvarez.
Benavidez, who is known by his moniker ‘The Mexican Monster’, has been pursuing a showdown with Canello for a number of years now but a fight between the duo is yet to come to fruition.
The 28-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona has previously reigned as the WBC super-middleweight world champion on two occasions, where he became the mandatory challenger to Canelo last year before he opted to make the move up to 175lbs.
Benavidez was elevated to full WBC light-heavyweight champion back in April after former title holder Dmitry Bivol vacated the belt to focus on a trilogy bout with Artur Beterbiev.
Speaking to Clocked N’ Loaded, ‘The Mexican Monster’ revealed that Saudi chief Alalshikh intends to make a fight between himself and Canelo at some stage next year, but claims that this will come down to Alvarez and whether he is actually interested in facing the unbeaten light-heavyweight champion.
“Turki Alalshikh told me that he wants me to fight Canelo at the end of the four-fight contract. He said that, but at the end of the day it comes down to Canelo.”
Canelo is less than two weeks away from his highly anticipated ‘super-fight’ with fellow pound-for-pound great Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, as he defends his undisputed super-middleweight championship against the 37-year-old on September 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As for Benavidez, ‘The Mexican Monster’ is pencilled in to make the maiden defence of his WBC light-heavyweight crown against Britain’s Anthony Yarde at the ANB Arena in Riyadh on Saturday November 22.
