David Benavidez is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in world boxing, and Jake Paul is right up there too despite the differences in what each man has achieved in the ring.
Paul is best known for being a former YouTuber who has transitioned to the fight game over the last few years. He has picked his opponents wisely, mostly opting for ageing mixed martial artists, and the one time he fought a recognised fighter in Tommy Fury he lost on points.
Most recently he took on the legendary former heavyweight champion of the world, Mike Tyson. In the controversial bout in Texas, Paul came out on top after Tyson looked every one of his 58 years and the younger man was able to pick off his shots at will.
Benavidez is a two-time super middleweight champion who has now moved up to light heavyweight. His first fight at the weight saw him beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk and pick up an interim title. There is now a strong chance he could fight the winner of the rematch between Dmitry Bivol and undisputed ruler Artur Beterbiev next year.
Ahead of that speaking with Cigar Talk, he was asked if he would entertain a fight with Paul and didn’t hesitate in his response.
“Oh yeah, 100%, that’s what I’m saying, I’m here to fight anybody, I don’t give a f**k.”
Elsewhere, Benavidez has praised his ‘friend’ Paul for his marketing ability and bringing fresh eyes to the sport.
There is a long list of names that Paul has been linked with for big fights, not least Tommy Fury which would give him a chance at revenge. As for Benavidez, he returns to the ring to face David Morrell in February 2025.
