Light-heavyweight star David Benavidez has predicted the outcome of a showdown between prime versions of Roy Jones Jr and Floyd Mayweather.
In the eyes of many fans and analysts, Jones and Mayweather are widely considered to be two of the greatest fighters to have ever laced up the gloves.
Jones captured world titles in four weight classes throughout the course of his career, although the bulk of his success came during the 1990s where he racked up victories over the likes of Mike McCallum, James Toney and Bernard Hopkins.
As for Mayweather, the Michigan native became a five division world champion during his 21-year tenure which spanned between 1996 and 2017. He defeated an array of generational greats along the way, including Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao.
One man who is hoping his own career can reach similar heights is WBC light-heavyweight champion Benavidez, who is also a two-time world champion at super-middleweight.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Benavidez didn’t hesitate to give his backing to Jones in a fantasy showdown with Mayweather, as he claims the hall-of-fame inductee was ‘different’.
“To be honest with you, I feel like in his prime Roy Jones was untouched by anybody just because [of] his speed, athleticism, everything was just different you know. People say God give him talent, I feel like Roy Jones at his physical prime, he had God given talent.”
After the former pound-for-pound stars went back and forth on social media in recent weeks, Jones called for the fight to happen. Mayweather is unlikely to bite, however, having managed to stick to the exhibition scene since his retirement.
