Two-weight world champion David Benavidez believes there is just one active fighter that is ‘scared’ of stepping into the ring with him.

Benavidez has consistently proved himself to be one of the most exciting fighters in the sport over the last few years, with his most recent victory coming against David Morrell back in February.

The 28-year-old from Phoenix is just days away from making his much anticipated return to the ring as he gears up to defend his WBC light heavyweight title against Britain’s Anthony Yarde at the ANB Arena in Riyadh on Saturday night.

Prior to making the move up to 175lbs, ‘The Mexican Monster’ had an impressive campaign at super-middleweight where he reigned as the WBC world champion on two occasions between 2017 and 2020.

One man that he failed to secure a showdown with during his time at super-middleweight is Mexican superstar and two-time undisputed champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Benavidez claimed that he believes Canelo is ‘scared of him’ before criticising his decision to face Terence Crawford in September.

“The only person that’s scared of me is Canelo. And I can say that for a fact. To be honest with you, nobody wanted to see him fight Crawford. No disrespect to Crawford but people wanted to see him fight Bivol again. People wanted to see him fight me, you know what I mean? So if he’s not going to retire then what fights is he going to get?”

After suffering the third defeat of his career to Crawford, Canelo finds himself at a crossroads in his career, with it currently unknown what his next move will be.
