David Benavidez and David Morrell came to blows at their recent media workout.
Benavidez is the current WBC interim light-heavyweight champion following his victory over Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June, with a record of 29-0, 24 of those wins coming by knockout.
Morrell is also undefeated at 11-0, and holds the WBA regular belt at 175 after beating Radivoje Kalajdzic for the vacant strap back in August.
While both Benavidez and Morrell are highly skilled, there appears to be no love lost between the pair, as illustrated when they had to be pulled apart during their workout in Miami this week.
‘The Mexican Monster’ has now revealed one of the issues that is stemming from that incident, stating that no drug testing nearly caused the bout to be cancelled.
“I had to call PBC and tell them if we don’t take the VADA test, we’re going to cancel the whole fight, because you guys didn’t want to test.”
The accusations were immediately hit back by the Morrell camp, and led to the fracas which saw Benavidez shove Morrell, and Morrell throw his belt at his opponent.
The victor between Benavidez and Morrell could find themselves in line for a huge bout next, after the WBC announced that it will now be a final eliminator to determine the mandatory challenger for that title.
Artur Beterbiev is the current undisputed light-heavyweight champion, and defends his belts in a rematch against Dmitry Bivol in February, with the winner potentially meeting Benavidez or Morrell later in the year.
