In a surprising turn of events, Conor Benn has revealed exactly why he has ditched Matchroom to sign for Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing.

It was revealed on Friday evening that Benn had signed a deal with Zuffa in an announcement that has sent shockwaves through the sport.

The 29-year-old from London had worked alongside Eddie Hearn and Matchroom since he entered the paid ranks back in 2016 but he has now opted to go down a different route as he enters the next chapter of his career.

Benn was last in action back in November when he defeated domestic rival Chris Eubank Jr via unanimous decision at the conclusion of their rematch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

In a statement that he posted on social media, Benn revealed that he decided to link up with Zuffa after Dana White made him an ‘offer he couldn’t refuse’, although the 29-year-old spoke fondly of former promoter Hearn who has played a key role in the Brit’s career to date.

“First and foremost, I want to thank Eddie and the entire team at Matchroom for everything they’ve done for me over the past decade.

From guiding me when I first turned pro, to headlining stadium shows. They were not only with me for those highlight moments but stood shoulder to shoulder with me during the tough times.

It’s been a journey beyond anything we could have imagined, and for their belief, support, and guidance, I will always be truly grateful, but Zuffa Boxing presented me with an opportunity I simply couldn’t refuse. I’d love Eddie to continue to be part of my team and for our partnership to evolve in this new chapter.

I’m filled with excitement and hunger for what’s ahead with Zuffa Boxing. I want the legacy fights, the biggest nights, the biggest stages. I fear no man at any weight, and I’m ready to give the fans the fights they’ve been calling for. I’m in my prime, and together we have bold, ambitious plans.”

Benn is expected to drop down to welterweight ahead of his return to the ring, which is expected to be made official in the near future.

‘The Destroyer’ had been linked with a potential showdown with the winner of the upcoming clash between WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios and Ryan Garcia, as he sets his sights on capturing world honours for the first time.
