Terence Crawford is, in his own words, only chasing fights that add to his legacy and bank balance.
At the top of the four-weight world champion’s list is Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez – a fight he would have to move up a further two divisions to make happen.
Whilst there is an appetite for it, some in the sport believe piling on another 14 pounds is a step too far for the Omaha native. That includes two-weight world champion Bernard Hopkins.
Speaking to FightHype.com, Hopkins told Crawford to fight Jaron Ennis rather than chase Canelo, who he would like to see in with David Benavidez.
“I would love to see [Crawford] fight Boots from Philadelphia. I’m from Philly. Boots deserves that, he earned that. Boots is undefeated, whooping everybody’s ass. That’s the fight. Get past Boots … Canelo’s bigger and stronger. It ain’t gonna be easy like you think it is. I don’t like that fight. I like the fight with Benavidez [Canelo]. That’s the fight that makes sense and people would jump on that fight.”
‘Boots’ Ennis is undefeated in 32, a switch-hitter like Crawford and currently the IBF Welterweight Champion having benefitted when Crawford moved up in weight. He has long said he wants the fight and that if unifying the titles at 147 pounds can’t happen – and it has been difficult up until this point for him – that he is willing to go to 154 to make it.
Next up for ‘Boots’ is a rematch with Karen Chukhadzhian – a man he already beat in early 2023 to win the Interim belt before being elevated.
