Billy Joe Saunders hasn’t fought since losing to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in 2021.

The Hatfield man had a fine amateur career that saw him represent Team GB at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 before turning over the following year.

By 2015, he earned himself a world title shot and beat Andy Lee by KO, then held the belt until 2018. In 2019, he became super middleweight champion when he beat the unheralded Shefat Isufi for a vacant title, while other solid wins came over the likes of Chris Eubank Jr, David Lemieux and Willie Monroe Jr.

In 2021, he put his super middleweight belt on the line in a unification contest against Alvarez. He started well but was caught with a huge uppercut which broke his orbital bone and led to his first professional defeat.

He has often spoken of making a ring return. As of yet, nothing has materialised but speaking to Box Nation recently, he gave an update.

“The thing is with me, thankfully, I’ve been lucky and blessed in the sport. A lot of people end up with nothing. I’m enjoying doing a bit of training at the moment.”

He then outlined who he would come out of retirement for and named the man he beat back in 2015.

“If there was a fight that would give me that urge to put them back on it would most definitely be Eubank.”

Eubank is busy with another grudge match versus Conor Benn, but if he comes through that, a rematch with Saunders would be a popular option for both men.
