Legendary promoter Bob Arum believes Floyd Mayweather would have suffered a loss had he been fighting against today’s pound-for-pound stars.
‘Money’ Mayweather is widely considered to be one of the greatest fighters of all time, making his case throughout the course of his impressive 21-year professional career which stretched between 1996 and 2017.
He captured world titles across five weight classes during his tenure, racking up victories over a number of generational greats along the way.
Just a few months after he defeated MMA legend Conor McGregor in their lucrative crossover showdown in August of 2017, Mayweather announced his retirement from the sport with an unblemished record of 50-0 to his name. With the undefeated status comes predictions for fantasy fights and who, if anybody, could change it.
Arum – who promoted Mayweather during his early days – believes Terence Crawford would, as he told ESNEWS.
“Crawford [would beat Mayweather]. Crawford fighting, a guy his size, is unique because one thing that he has that other fighters don’t have is that he’s totally ambidextrous. So when he shifts from orthodox to southpaw he’s equally effective either way.”
‘Bud’ Crawford is currently 41 fights into a professional career in which he has captured world titles across four weight classes, including the undisputed championship at super-lightweight and welterweight.
The 37-year-old from Omaha is less than two weeks away from what could be the toughest test of his career as he prepares to challenge Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super-middleweight championship at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on September 13.
Mayweather is one of only two men to beat Canelo. The Mexican recently revealed he believes Crawford will be a tougher test.
