David Benavidez continues to seek out a fight with Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.
The 27-year-old recently made a successful debut at light-heavyweight but announced that he would move back down to super-middle to continue to pursue the four-belt champion. His latest move to force the fight is to enforce his mandatory position with the WBC.
Fans and analysts agree that it’s the best fight to be made in the division, but Canelo has, in the past, been dismissive of it.
One man who has seen fights come and go is Bob Arum, 92, who has headed up Top Rank since 1973. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the veteran promoter seemed to lean towards Benavidez but stopped short of making a prediction. He, like most, is uncertain the fight gets made.
“I’ve always been a Benavidez fan. I think he’s a very good fighter. Canelo hasn’t been as good lately as he was before, so I think that would be a very competitive match. Now whether economically so forth it makes any sense, that’s up to the fighters, neither of whom I promote. But certainly it would be interesting to see.”
For it to happen, the undisputed champion has said he will need $150 – $200 million on the table, something only Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh is likely to consider.
