Veteran promoter Bob Arum has weighed in with his prediction if his old charge Terence Crawford were to step into the ring against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
‘Bud’ was last out in August when he made his 154lb debut against Israil Madrimov, defeating him on points to become a four-weight world champion.
Since that victory Crawford, who has the backing of Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh, has rejected fights against the likes of Vergil Ortiz and Sebastian Fundora in search of Canelo’s signature. Although the Mexican originally dismissed the matchup, claiming he would get no credit in beating the naturally smaller man, more recently he has appeared more open to the idea and always stated that he will fight anyone ‘if the money is right‘.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Arum, who guided Crawford for many years through promotional outfit Top Rank, gives the American very little chance against Canelo.
“I think Canelo wipes the floor with him.
I love Crawford, I told you when Crawford was fighting Spence that Crawford would beat the hell out of him.
But Canelo is a different proposition. It’s an interesting fight, but I think there’s only one winner. Canelo is used to fighting at a particular level and I don’t think that Terence can hurt Canelo, but Canelo can hurt Terence.”
Canelo last fought in September – a routine points victory over Edgar Berlanga. He had hoped to rematch Dmitry Bivol next but after the Russian’s loss to Artur Beterbiev earlier this month, the door may have just been opened for Crawford to get the fight he’s been chasing.
