Bob Arum has weighed in on a fight between two four-weight world champions, Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
The potential match-up would be a fascinating clash of styles. Crawford, the slick, switch-hitting technician, has long called out Canelo, the aggressive, powerful counter-puncher and current unified super-middleweight ruler. There are, however, obstacles in the way, not least the two-division weight gap from their last fights.
Crawford has been respectful in his call outs but also shows a clear a desire to prove he is the pound-for-pound best in the world. Alvarez initially dismissed the proposition, claiming he would get no credit for beating a smaller man. He has since said he is willing to make any fight if the money is right, giving the American a small window of hope.
‘Bud’ last competed at super-welterweight, winning the WBA World Title in his divisional debut against Israil Madrimov. He would be required to pack on a further 14 pounds to meet the Mexican at super-middle.
Promoter Arum, who has seen it all in the sport, does not like the fight for his former charge Crawford. In fact, Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Arum gave the smaller man no chance in the fight, saying there is ‘only one winner.’
“I think Canelo wipes the floor with him. I love Crawford, I told you when Crawford was fighting Spence that Crawford would beat the hell out of him.
But Canelo is a different proposition. It’s an interesting fight, but I think there’s only one winner. Canelo is used to fighting at a particular level and I don’t think that Terence can hurt Canelo, but Canelo can hurt Terence.”
