Gervonta Davis is a man high in demand and looks set to feature in a lightweight unification clash later this year.

The 29-year-old from Baltimore returned to the ring last month after over a year out, dispatching of previously-undefeated Frank Martin in eight to retain his WBA World title.

The two fights fans want to see are ‘Tank’ in with IBF Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko and WBC Champion Shakur Stevenson.

Stevenson this weekend defended his belt successfully, albeit underwhelmingly in the eyes of many, and reinforced his desire to face a fellow champion next.

Davis’ co-trainer Kenny Ellis took to social media post-fight to announce that Lomachenko – who has been in early talks for the fight – would ‘step aside’ to allow the fight against Shakur to take place first.

“Breaking news. Lomachenko said he will step aside and let Gervonta Davis fight Shakur Stevenson this fall and he’ll fight the winner early 2025.”

It seemed a strange move from the Ukrainian, who is considerably older than both of his fellow champions.

Bob Arum of Top Rank – who promotes ‘Loma’ and did so with Stevenson until his contract ran its course this weekend not to be renewed – told Boxing Scene the news was ‘made up’.

“Let’s not jump any guns … These guys make up s**t.”

Carl Moretti, VP of Boxing Operations at Top Rank, added to the sentiment.

“So … some bucket carrier is saying ‘Loma’ doesn’t want the fight now? Make it make sense.”

Arum said that Lomachenko would be visiting the US soon to continue discussions already started with his manager Egis Klimas.
