Tyson Fury has been retired since January and now his promoter Bob Arum has spoken about his future amidst rumours he will make a return.
Fury has been a huge figure in British boxing for the last decade. His breakout fight on the world stage came in 2015 when he travelled to Germany and dethroned long-ruling unified world champion Wladimir Klitschko on points.
After a well-publicised battle with mental health and addiction that kept him away from the sport for two years, he returned with a couple of low-key wins before taking on another huge challenge.
This time, he headed Stateside to take on the WBC knockout king Deontay Wilder, another long-ruling champion with a fearsome right hand. Although the first fight was a controversial draw, ‘The Gypsy King’ won the next two by knockout.
He went on to beat the likes of Derek Chisora, Dillian Whyte and Otto Wallin before, in May 2024, stepping in with unified champion Oleksandr Usyk as he attempted to become undisputed.
That fight ended in a points loss, as did the rematch back in December, and in January Fury announced his retirement. Though he has said nothing about a return, training footage in the past weeks have led fans to believe he is bluffing.
Speaking on the subject to the 5 Live Boxing podcast, Arum said he thinks Fury will stay retired.
“If I was a betting man I would say he will never fight again. Marvin Hagler had an expression – ‘a rich guy who goes to bed wearing silk pyjamas doesn’t get up in the morning to do road work’.
“Tyson, really, I don’t think wants to get up in the morning and do road work and go through the experience of having to train when economically he doesn’t have to do it any more.”
Fury has retired five times and returned before now, so many hope he still has one last fight in him against British rival and former two-time world champion Anthony Joshua, who has also lost twice to Usyk and was knocked out by Daniel Dubois last time he fought back in September.
