Terence Crawford is unbeaten in 41 fights spanning 16 years and four weight-classes.
The 37-year-old switch hitter from Omaha, Nebraska is a slick and punishing operator with finishing instincts unmatched. On his way to the very top of the pound-for-pound list, he has beaten the likes of Ricky Burns, Vitktor Postol, Kell Brook, Shawn Porter and Errol Spence Jr.
Crawford’s most recent outing was a debut at super-welterweight in which he decisioned previously undefeated Israil Madrimov to become WBA Champion. Not only was the fight to add a fourth division to his resume, but also a measuring stick to see if he can move up in weight further to land the fight he really wants – Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.
The American has been adamant that he has what it takes to pile on another 14 pounds to fight and beat Canelo, who is undefeated at super-middleweight having only lost to Floyd Mayweather at a catchweight and Dmitry Bivol at light-heavy in the past.
For Crawford’s former promoter Bob Arum it is a step too far. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the boxing business veteran predicting a clear win for the Mexican should the fight happen.
“I think Canelo wipes the floor with him. I love Crawford, I told you when Crawford was fighting Spence that Crawford would beat the hell out of him.
But Canelo is a different proposition. It’s an interesting fight, but I think there’s only one winner. Canelo is used to fighting at a particular level and I don’t think that Terence can hurt Canelo, but Canelo can hurt Terence.”
Though Canelo was initially dismissive of the bout, his options for mega fights are dwindling and, with the backing of Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season, Crawford may just offer him a number he will struggle to refuse.
