Legendary promoter Bob Arum has weighed in on Deontay Wilder‘s chances of reaching the pinnacle of the heavyweight division once again.
The 39-year-old former long-reigning WBC heavyweight champion is coming off the back of successive defeats against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, which has left him having to make an important decision about his future in the sport.
It appears that ‘The Bronze Bomber’ has opted to stay away from retirement for the time being, with his return to the ring expected to come within the next couple of months, with American heavyweight Curtis Harper emerging as a potential opponent.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Arum didn’t hesitate to sum up Wilder’s chances of reclaiming a world heavyweight title in the future, claiming ‘it’s over’ for the 39-year-old as he explores the idea of ‘The Bronze Bomber’ securing a fight with Anthony Joshua, who is also coming off a devastating defeat at the hands of Daniel Dubois.
“I think it’s over for him [Anthony Joshua] as well as over for Wilder. Maybe they can fight each other, that’d be good.”
Asked if he thinks it is time for the knockout artist from Alabama to hang up the gloves, Arum said he didn’t have the information required to answer.
“I’ve had Wilder in fights with Fury, but I don’t know how he checks out physically with doctors and so forth, so I can’t even make a decision.”
At the peak of his powers, Wilder was one of, if not the most explosive and dangerous punchers in boxing. Out of the 43 victories he has picked up during his professional career, 42 of them have come inside the distance.
He has knocked out the likes of Luiz Ortiz, Artur Szpilka and Robert Helenius. Father time catches up with everyone however, with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ now entering what is the final chapter of his storied career.
