A two-time Fighter of the Year winner has criticised the credentials of five-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
‘Money’ Mayweather’s outstanding professional career spanned just over two decades, where he picked up world titles from super featherweight all the way up to light middleweight.
The 48-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan defeated a number great fighters throughout his tenure, including the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley to name just a few.
Mayweather finally drew the curtain on his career back in 2017, shortly after he defeated MMA legend Conor McGregor in his 50th and final bout in August of that year.
Despite his incredible success, one retired fighter in particular has spoken out and criticised Mayweather for not actually being as great as millions of people are claiming he is.
In an interview on WiseNuts YouTube channel, retired three-weight world champion James Toney responded to claims that ‘Money’ Mayweather is the greatest of all time.
“Not even close.”
Toney then backed up this claim, admitting Mayweather would not have even stood a chance during his era.
“Have him fight in my era. He didn’t fight the fighters that were around in the ’90s. He waited till they retired and got out the game. He didn’t fight Chavez. He wouldn’t fight Chavez. He wouldn’t beat Chavez. Hatton was s**t. Garbage. He beat ‘Canelo,’ I’ll give him that.”
‘Lights Out’ won world titles at middleweight, super middleweight and cruiserweight during his career, picking up legacy defining victories against a number of top fighters such as Mike McCallum and Iran Barkley before he finally walked away from boxing in 2017 after winning in his 92nd and final outing of his tenure.
