Former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs has urged a young star to walk away from the sport in a shock statement.
Briggs suffered just a handful of defeats throughout the course of his professional career, which spanned between 1992 and 2016.
The Brooklyn-native racked up an outstanding 53 knockout victories during his tenure, proving himself to be one of the hardest punching heavyweights of his generation with a knockout-to-win ratio of 88.3%.
Briggs achieved his career-long dream of capturing a version of the world heavyweight championship back in November of 2006 when he stopped Belarusian Siarhei Liakhovich in the final round of their bout to capture the WBO heavyweight title.
Another fighter that has big ambitions of becoming world champion is Ryan Garcia, but in an interview with Fight Hype, Briggs sensationally called for ‘King Ry’ to draw the curtain on his professional career, brandishing him as the ‘worst fighter ever’.
“What’s his name, Garcia? Retire. Retire. Worst fighter ever. Garcia, the worst fighter in boxing history. He s***ged everybody with a jab and a check hook.
“He got good fundamentals … but he ain’t no fighter. All that drama s**t, all that racist s**t, and then to come back and fight like that? You lost to Rolly?
“Boxing is crazy right now. If those are the superstars, then what? I was right there ringside for all the fights and I was like ‘damn, horrible.’”
Garcia has been the subject of intense controversy over the last 18 months, making waves in May of 2024 when it was revealed that he had tested positive for a banned substance in the lead-up to his clash with Devin Haney one month earlier.
The 27-year-old from California made his long-awaited return to the ring back in May after serving a suspension from the sport, but suffered the second defeat of his career to countryman Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, falling short in his attempt at becoming the WBA Regular welterweight champion.
