Frank Bruno Brands Fellow Heavyweight Legend A ‘Snake’

Frank Bruno has had some choice words for one of his former heavyweight rivals.

Bruno is a much-loved British sportsman who was famously tough throughout his boxing career. He notoriously had four attempts to become a world heavyweight champion and succeeded in his final attempt when he beat Oliver McCall at Wembley in 1995 for the WBC world title.

He had previously fought and lost to Mike Tyson – and his final contest was a rematch against ‘Iron Mike’, which he also lost – while Tim Witherspoon beat him for the WBA strap in 1986, though he did beat the likes of Joe Bugner and Carl Williams.

One man he failed to beat was the former undisputed ruler Lennox Lewis when they fought in 1993.

Speaking to Ring Magazine, Bruno was asked about a recent reunion with Lewis.

“I’m just doing it for the peace. It does look awkward. He was showing off out there, saying Frank, do you want a rematch in front of all the boxers out there. He’s not right in the head. He needs a slap. I don’t really like him, I don’t really dig for him. He’s a snake.”

He was then asked why and referenced the fractious build-up to their fight and some of the comments Lewis made at the time.

“It’s horrible someone calling someone an Uncle Tom and all those things. He’s not a grown-up man, he’s a child.”

Bruno was recently talking about the toughest night he ever had in the squared circle, and neither Lewis or Tyson got the nod. Instead, it was Pierre Coetzer who he fought and beat in 1992.
