Terence Crawford wants to move up a further two weight-classes to face Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.

The American has only had one fight at super-welter but is adamant he has the skills to pack on 14 more pounds and beat Alvarez, who is undefeated at super-middle having only lost to Floyd Mayweather at a catchweight in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol up at light-heavy in 2022.

One of the eleven opponents who have tried and failed to beat Canelo in the 168 ranks is Caleb Plant. The 32-year-old fan favourite put his IBF belt on the line against the Mexican’s WBC, WBA and WBO in an undisputed contest back in 2021. Plant used his movement well to open the contest but was ground down and stopped in the eleventh.

Speaking to Cigar Talk, ‘Sweethands’ isn’t of the belief that the weight jump is too much for Crawford. In fact, he believes the smaller man has what it takes to make the fight competitive and even win.

“In general, no [I don’t like big weight jumps] but Terence, he’s a special breed. Thus far, when he’s set out to do something he’s accomplished it. Terence Crawford is not just any fighter. In that sense I would be interested.

“I think he has a chance. Whether he does or he doesn’t, that’s for them to figure out. Terence is a special breed like I said before, so I would tune in. I’d be interested to see that.”

Canelo has been relatively dismissive of the bout against his fellow four-division world champion in the past but has said he will entertain any offers. He may be more receptive this time around because, with a rematch against Bivol now off the table, his options for big nights under the lights are dwindling.

Plant is coming off an impressive stoppage win over Trevor McCumby which moves him closer to the belts once more.
