Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are just over three months away from their highly-anticipated showdown.
The two pound-for-pound greats will meet in September, with Canelo putting his undisputed titles at 168lbs on the line against Crawford, who is moving up two weight divisions from 154lbs, having spent most of his career campaigning at welterweight.
Canelo has never tasted defeat in the super-middleweight division and is currently in his second reign as undisputed at 168lbs, having first earned that honour when he defeated Caleb Plant in 2021 to add the IBF belt to his WBC, WBA and WBO collection.
Plant has now weighed in on how he feels the fight involving his former foe and Crawford will go, telling The Ariel Helwani Show that he believes ‘Bud’ has what it takes to potentially spring an upset.
“I give him a shot. I don’t know who wins and honestly there’s weight classes for a reason right, but at the same time Terence is a special person with special abilities, special mental fortitude, special strength.
“You can’t put too much past Terence Crawford, especially once he’s got his mind made up and really wants it. I think both have things that fall in their favour, but that’s what makes this so interesting, that’s why everybody will tune in to see what’s going to happen.
“When it’s two special fighters it’s most fair to just the bell ring and let them handle it…Bud isn’t going to be running round the ring for 12 rounds. That’s not in his blood and obviously not in Canelo’s either. This is going to be a fan friendly right.”
One former world champion that is certain that Crawford will come out on top is James Toney, who has likened the upcoming fight to when he went up against Evander Holyfield.
