Caleb Plant is one of the few men to have shared the ring with both Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and David Benavidez.
Speaking to FightHype about a potential match-up between the two, Plant called it as a 50/50 fight.
“Both fighters have their edges which will work in their favour.
Obviously David has got some good momentum, is the bigger boy, throws a lot of punches and a good frame.
Canelo has the experience level amongst other things, his ring IQ, his ring generalship and stuff like that.
You just got to put all the dice in your hand for each person and roll them on fight night and let the bell ring. I can’t say for sure [who wins]. In any big fight like that you can’t say for sure, that’s not how boxing works.
That’s the honest answer. It’s not me trying to avoid picking, but I try to be an honest person and that’s the truth.”
Benavidez got tired of waiting for his shot at Canelo and moved up to light-heavyweight for his last fight. He cruised to victory against former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk by a wide unanimous decision.
The ‘Mexican Monster’ had to decide whether to move back down to 168 to try and enforce his WBC mandatory position for Canelo or stay at 175 to be first in line to face the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol. His father has now revealed that a letter has been sent to the WBC and they expect them to order a Canelo clash sooner rather than later.
