Joe Calzaghe and Andre Ward are unquestionably two of the greatest super-middleweights ever.
A fantasy fight between the pair has been debated for some years now, with many fans and pundits left wondering how things would have played out if they had locked horns during their respective careers.
Both Calzaghe and Ward retired from the sport undefeated, with just shy of 80 victories between them. Ward reigned as the unified world champion between 2009 and 2015, whereas Calzaghe held the WBO world title at 168lbs for 10 years, making the Welshman the longest reigning world super middleweight champion of all time.
Calzaghe and Ward recently met up at the Welshman’s gym in Newbridge, where they appeared to reminisce about their respective careers and discuss what exactly would have happened in a fantasy fight between them.
Speaking on footage taken from Ward’s YouTube channel ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT, the Welsh legend initially seemed to back himself against Ward.
“I’m a southpaw; I’ve got a good chin; I’m just awkward in a fight, man. I give everybody a nightmare.”
As their conversation began to intensify, Calzaghe eventually came to a conclusion on how that intriguing fantasy fight against Ward would have ended – a draw.
“I’ll tell you what, brother, let’s just say [it would have been] a draw.”
The American agreed, meaning both would keep their undefeated records.
Unfortunately, a showdown between Calzaghe and Ward will never take place, although one thing that the boxing world can agree on is that it would have been a technical masterpiece from start to finish.
