Joe Calzaghe Offered Mega Money To Face Fellow Hall Of Fame Fighter In Comeback

It has been revealed that Joe Calzaghe was briefly set to fight a fellow Hall of Famer but the contest fell through after he changed his mind.

Retired Welsh legend Calzaghe is widely regarded as one of the best super-middleweights in history. His unmatched career spanned from 1993 to 2008 and saw him fight 46 times. He remained unbeaten and is one of the few men to ever retire without tasting defeat.

He held the WBO super-middleweight title for over 10 years from 1997 to 2008 and successfully defended it a record 21 times. He became the unified super-middleweight champion by unifying the WBO, WBA, and WBC titles and defeating opponents such as Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler.

After that he moved up and won a split decision against Bernard Hopkins to capture the The Ring light heavyweight title before his final contest saw him get a unanimous decision win over Roy Jones Jr.

Speaking to another former super-middleweight great in Carl Froch, Turki Alalshikh revealed that he made an offer to Calzaghe to fight ‘The Cobra.’

“Last year I gave him an offer to fight you and he accepted then the next day he changed his mind. It was not for an exhibition, it was for a real fight. Still, I want to see this fight.”

Although there was a brief time when both men were active fighters, at the point this offer was made Froch was 46 and Calzaghe was 50 and had been long retired. It seems this fantasy contest will forever remain one that got away.
