Canelo Alvarez Dismisses Floyd Mayweather Jr’s Unbeaten Record: “He Lost That Fight”

Floyd Mayweather Jr became the first man to defeat Canelo Alvarerz when they fought 12-years ago.

Canelo put his WBC world light middleweight title at stake against ‘Money’ Mayweather in their 2013 bout, which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Despite the best efforts of a young Canelo, the experience and technical brilliance of Mayweather proved to be the difference on the night as he handed the Mexican superstar the first defeat of his career on points.

Mayweather drew the curtain on his incredible career back in 2017 after being victorious in all 50 of his professional contests, but Canelo believes the retired fve-weight world champion should have been handed a defeat on at least one occasion.

In a interview with King J, the 34-year-old Mexican discussed ‘Money’ Mayweather’s 2007 battle with Oscar De La Hoya, as he admits what he believes the result should have been.

“I think Oscar De La Hoya won.”

Billed as ‘The World Awaits’, Mayweather and De La Hoya locked horns on May 5 2007 in one of the biggest fights of that era, with ‘The Golden Boy’ putting his WBC light middleweight title on the line.

The highly competitive 12-round contest more than lived up to its billing, with the judges scoring it 116-112 and 115-113 in favour of Mayweather, and 113-115 in favour of De La Hoya. Many at ringside expressed their disappointment at the scorecards, although the punch stats showed that ‘Money’ comprehensively out landed De La Hoya across the entirety of the bout.

‘The Golden Boy’ would go on to retire from boxing just a couple of years later after he was beaten by Manny Pacquiao in the 45th and final outing of his tenure. The Mexican-American has gone on to have a successful career as a promoter, working with a number of highly-rated fighters including Canelo, Marco Antonio Barrera and Shane Mosley.
