Canelo Alvarez and Jaron Ennis sent shockwaves through the sport last month when they were pictured after sparring each other.
Mexican superstar Canelo enlisted ‘Boots’ Ennis as a sparring partner during the later stages of his training camp in preparation for his highly anticipated super-fight with Terence Crawford.
Canelo is set to defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship against the 37-year-old at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.
One man that got to witness the sparring between Canelo and ‘Boots’ at first hand is Cuban middleweight prospect Yoenli Hernandez, who remains unbeaten in eight contests since making his professional debut back in 2022.
In an interview with MillCity Boxing, Hernandez shared some inside information after witnessing Canelo and Ennis’ share the ring with each other. as he claimed the Mexican great got the better of the session.
“At some point, Boots didn’t know how to handle some of the stuff from Canelo brought to the table in the Sparring session. Canelo found a way to get inside on Boots, and that’s why he benefited more from the sparring than he did.”
It has been reported that Canelo added unbeaten switch-hitter ‘Boots’ to his training camp ahead of his showdown with Crawford as the American duo have a very similar fighting style to each other.
Ennis is currently in preparations for his move up to super-welterweight, having previously reigned as the unified WBA and IBF welterweight champion. The 28-year-old from Philadelphia is set to face Portugal’s Uisma Lima in a non-title bout at the Wells Fargo Center on October 11, as he sets his sights on becoming a two-weight world champion in the near future.
