Canelo Comeback Plans Suffer Major Blow Following Retirement Announcement

Canelo Alvarez‘s planned comeback to boxing has suffered a major setback this week.

The Mexican great was last in action when he suffered defeat at the hands Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford in Las Vegas on September 13, surrendering his undisputed super-middleweight championship in the process.

Canelo is currently recovering from an injury that he sustained to his left elbow which is expected to keep sidelined until at least the middle of 2026. It has been reported that the Mexican’s recovery is going well.

The 35-year-old from Guadalajara is said to have been extremely keen on facing ‘Bud’ Crawford in a rematch once he is able to return to action, as he sets his sights on reclaiming a title once again.

These plans have now been dealt a major blow after Crawford announced his retirement from the sport, bringing an end to what was an exceptional professional career.

The 38-year-old from Omaha etched his name into the boxing history with that victory over Canelo, becoming the first male fighter of the modern era to win an undisputed world championship in three separate divisions.

Crawford became the latest legendary champion to walk away from the sport without suffering a single defeat, remaining unbeaten in all 42 of his professional bouts.

Canelo will now be forced to make an important decision on his own future in boxing, with no mega profile bouts currently available.
