For many, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is one of the best boxers of his generation.
The Mexican began his career at the unthinkably young age of 15, and since then he has only been beaten twice. In all he has now had 66 fights, won 62 of them and drawn two, with 39 victories coming by knockout.
Across the years, the 34-year-old has held several world championships in four different weight classes from light middleweight right up to light heavyweight. He has also been unified in three of those divisions and held lineal titles in two of them.
He is currently the unified super middleweight champion and is set to take on former two weight undisputed champion and current 154lb ruler Terence Crawford in September after William Scull in May.
Canelo vs Crawford is a true modern day super fight in which the size advantages very much lay with ‘Canelo’ who is the naturally bigger man, though many were just a s keen to see him take on fellow super-middleweight turned light heavyweight David Benavidez.
Speaking to DAZN, ‘Canelo’ was listed some names from boxing past and asked which were better than him.
Although not reacting when hearing the likes of Julio César Chávez, Bernard Hopkins and Marvin Hagler, he conceded that both Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol were “better than me on the night”, and the only other name that got a response from ‘Canelo’ was Muhammad Ali.
He fought Mayweather back in 2013 and was outclassed on points, and he stepped up to light heavyweight to take on Bivol in May 202 and was again beaten on the scorecards.
They remain his only two losses amongst victories over the likes of Amir Khan, Callum Smith, Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev and many more.
