A mega-fight between Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and Terence Crawford is potentially just months away.
It was revealed at the beginning of 2025 that the pound-for-pound stars, who are both four-division world champions, had agreed to face each other in what is undoubtedly one of the biggest fights in boxing.
Canelo currently reigns as the unified WBC, WBA and WBO super-middleweight champion, although he could become the undisputed champion at 168lbs for a second time if he can defeat IBF champion William Scull, who he faces in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on May 3.
‘Bud’ Crawford is faced with the task of moving up two weight classes ahead of his showdown with Canelo, after his last outing came against Israil Madrimov who he beat via unanimous decision last August to claim the WBA Super-Welterweight World Title. Madrimov provided a tricky operator for Crawford, not letting the American find a rythym too often over the course of the fight.
The result was described as a ‘robbery’ by promoter Eddie Hearn, and another person who shares this view is Canelo himself, who revealed in an interview with the media that he believes his future opponent should not have had his hand raised against the Uzbek star.
“For me, I think he lost. He lost the fight. Or draw, it could be the other side. He knows [now] why there is weight classes.”
Crawford is now gearing up for what is undoubtedly the toughest test of his exceptional professional career, where he has remained unbeaten through 41 outings.
The 37-year-old switch-hitter from Omaha will have his eyes firmly set on Canelo’s upcoming bout against Scull, with an official announcement for the highly anticipated mega-fight set to take place in the weeks that follow.
