Saul Canelo Alvarez has fought some of the biggest and best names in the sport throughout his career,

After making his debut as a 15-year-old back in 2005, the Mexican superstar has shown no signs of slowing down nearly two decades later.

His illustrious career has led to him becoming a four-weight world champion, with his first world title win coming way back in 2011 when he defeated Matthew Hatton.

Alvarez has also claimed the undisputed crown at super-middleweight, defeating Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant to earn that accolade.

During his career he has shared the ring with some of boxing’s best ever talents, including Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Sergey Kovalev, and Dmitry Bivol. Losses to Mayweather and Bivol are the only two on his record.

When it came to naming the toughest fight of his career though, none of the above names were Canelo’s choice, as he told Dan Canobbio that another man holds that accolade.

“Gennady Golovkin.”

Canelo and Golovkin had a famous trilogy, which began in September 2017 at middleweight and ended in a draw, although a lot of observers felt that ‘GGG’ had done enough to win.

The pair met in a rematch 12 months later, with Alvarez this time doing enough to secure a narrow majority decision victory and hand Golovkin the first defeat of his professional career.

A third fight took place in 2022, this time at super-middleweight, with Canelo once again having his hand raised after earning a unanimous decision verdict without controversy.

It means that Canelo remains the only person to have defeated Golovkin during his 45 fight career.
