Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez may decide if fans ever see Terence Crawford in a ring again.

The Mexican, currently unified super-middleweight champion, has been on the end of the American’s call-outs for over a year now. Crawford made the first tentative step towards the fight by recently stepping up to super-welterweight. He has said the Canelo challenge is the only one left for him in the sport and it’s thought that he even may retire if he doesn’t land it. The 36-year-old himself has said it is certainly an option.

Canelo has ruled out discussions of the bout at least until his defence against Edgar Berlanga is out of the way this weekend, but that won’t stop the questions coming during fight week.

Speaking to Manouk Akopyan, Alvarez was asked why he saw the fight against ‘Bud’ as easy and he pointed to the gulf in weight.

“You know, what we saw in the last fight with him [against Israil Madrimov], I think that’s why there are weight classes. That’s what I think, it’s an easy fight for me.”

Crawford won unanimously on the scorecards against Madrimov for the WBA Super-Welterweight World title, though ended a run of ten stoppages leading to some suggestions that his power may not carry up as much as he would have hoped.

Still, Canelo said he will entertain an offer if it comes.

“Could be, why not? We are in boxing.”

Pushed on what price tag he would slap on the fight, the Mexican decided to turn attention back to Berlanga.

“You know already. You already asked me and I already told you. Right now I’m focused 100% on my fight on Saturday … You know the answer, buddy.”

Where he goes after this defence, if successful, will be extremely intriguing. As for Crawford, it looks like he’s willing to wait it out.
