Canelo Offered Fast Track Back To World Title Shot With Fight Against Number One Contender

Canelo Alvarez could be offered a route back to the world title picture after he suffered the third defeat of his career to Terence Crawford.

The 35-year-old from Guadalajara was dethroned of his undisputed super-middleweight world championship by ‘Bud’ at a sold out Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas last Saturday night.

The judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 all in favour of the unbeaten American, who has received praised for putting on arguably the best performance of his career against the two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs.

There had been some uncertainty around whether Canelo could go on to retire after he was beaten by Crawford, but it appears that the Mexican great intends to continue with his professional career and he could be matched against an unbeaten contender in the near future.

In an interview with Box Nation, Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren revealed that he would still like to make a fight between Canelo and unbeaten Brit Hamzah Sheeraz, who recently made the move up to super-middleweight.

“Yeah I’d like to do that fight, yeah, absolutely.”

“I think he’d [Sheeraz] give him a lot of problems now, he’d be too young [and] too fast for him.”

Sheeraz has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in the sport and he burst onto the world scene earlier this year when he stopped former world title challenger Edgar Berlanga Jr in the fifth round of their clash in New York on July 12.

The 26-year-old made the decision to move up to 168lbs after he fought to a split draw against reigning WBC world middleweight champion Carlos Adames at the beginning of the year, and a potential clash against Canelo could be an interesting affair. Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh, who works with both men, has expressed his interest in the fight previously.
