Canelo Alvarez appears to have been offered a career lifeline after suffering the third defeat of his career to Terence Crawford.
The 35-year-old from Guadalajara was comprehensively beaten by ‘Bud’ Crawford earlier this month, surrendering his undisputed super-middleweight championship to the unbeaten American at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Despite his best efforts, Canelo failed to match the tempo set by Crawford on fight night and ultimately fell short across all three of the judges scorecards, who had it 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 all in favour of ‘Bud’.
One man who remains interested in a showdown with the Mexican great, regardless of him suffering the third loss of his career, is reigning WBC light-heavyweight champion David Benavidez.
The pair have been linked to a fight for a number of years, but due to it never coming to fruition, most fans felt that any chances of seeing the bout were now over.
That may not be the case though, as speaking on the Inside The Ring Show, Benavidez once again expressed his desire to share the ring with Canelo, as he claims he will have ‘all the power’ should he become the undisputed light-heavyweight champion in the future.
“I feel like everything that’s happening in my career, I’m in a great position in every single way. I wasn’t going to go down to 168 but now if Canelo wants to come up then come, I got the WBC world title at 175.
“After I beat Bivol I’m going to have all the belts so after that happens, now I’m the one that has the power, now I’m the one. Canelo says he doesn’t fight for greatness, he fights for titles. Well let me go pick up all the titles and let’s come back to the table and talk.”
Benavidez is set to make the first defence of his WBC world title at 175lbs later this year as he gears up to face Britain’s Anthony Yarde on Saturday November 22 at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
