Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez is on the lookout for his next opponent.
Canelo was last out in the ring in September when he cruised to a wide unanimous decision over Edgar Berlanga.
Before the fight the super-middleweight champion told ESPN’s Mike Coppinger that he wanted a rematch with Dmitry Bivol next, providing the Russian could get past Artur Beterbiev.
“When I spoke to Canelo yesterday he told me he wants Dmitry Bivol next providing he beats Artur Beterbiev on October 12.”
Although Bivol was the first man to hear the final bell against the 39-year-old, he lost a close split decision on the scorecards. Bivol’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, was furious as the result was announced, having his man as a clear winner and calling for one of the judges to ‘never work again’.
Whether Canelo is prepared to switch up his plans and now take on Beterbiev at light-heavyweight for all the titles remains to be seen. One man who will be hoping to get his shot at the belts first is ‘The Mexican Monster’, David Benavidez.
Benavidez is the current WBC interim champion at 175lbs and will be hoping to get past David Morrell next and then have his chance against Beterbiev
In an interview before the Beterbiev-Bivol clash, Canelo was asked by KO Artists Sports who would provide the tougher challenge between Beterbiev and Benavidez and went with the new undisputed champion.
“Oh Beterbiev, yeah of course, He’s a champion. He has something to offer me. He’s strong, he’s in another weight.”
With many feeling Bivol did enough to get his hand raised the most likely next fight for Beterbiev will be the immediate rematch.
