Canelo Alvarez has been involved in some of the biggest fights in boxing for over a decade.
The Mexican icon is a four-weight world champion, having fought world champions from super-welterweight to light-heavyweight throughout his illustrious career.
He’s set for another mega-fight in September when he takes on Terence Crawford, who will be stepping up two weight divisions from 154lbs to 168lbs for the clash.
Crawford is also a four-weight world champion, with the main success in his career coming at welterweight, where he defeated the likes of Errol Spence and Shawn Porter to become undisputed in the division.
Another American superstar that had major success at welterweight was Floyd Mayweather, who dominated the sport for years before retiring in 2017 with a perfect record of 50-0.
In 2013, Mayweather took on Alvarez at 154lbs, in a fight that generated a then record 2.48 million pay-per-view buys, along with a gate at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas of over 20 million dollars.
It was Mayweather that came out on top in the contest, winning the fight on points, with the American remaining just one of two men along with Dmitry Bivol to have defeated Canelo.
While that fight may have been a huge success, Canelo has revealed how he thinks his upcoming clash with Crawford will compare.
“I think it’s going to be bigger than the Mayweather fight.”
Alvarez was then asked if the Crawford bout will generate more pay-per-view buys than his bout with Mayweather.
“Yeah I think so.”
Before Canelo fights Crawford, he first meets William Scull in May, looking to add the IBF title to his WBC, WBA and WBO collection and once again become undisputed at 168lbs.
