Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is gearing up to face Terence Crawford in a mega-fight later this year.
The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico finalised a deal to face the American superstar this September after a fight with YouTube star turned professional boxer Jake Paul fell through at the very last minute.
Before he focuses the entirety of his attention on ‘Bud’, Canelo is tasked with facing IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull on May 3 in Riyadh. Victory over Scull would see Canelo become the undisputed champion at 168lbs for the second time in his career.
Ahead of his showdown with Crawford, many comparisons have been made between the fighting styles of ‘Bud’ and Mayweather. When speaking to The Ring Magazine, Canelo agreed that he can use the Crawford fight as an opportunity to show that the reason he lost to Mayweather was simply down to a lack of experience.
“Yeah, to show people I’m different now with the experience, the fighter that I am today.
I always think that I needed more years before I fought Mayweather. Things happened and I learned a lot, and I don’t blame myself because of that. It’s kind of an opportunity to show what kind of fighter that I am.”
After defeating Canelo, Mayweather remained unbeaten for the remainder of his professional career, going on to face Manny Pacquiao in ‘The Fight Of The Century’ almost a decade ago.
The 48-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan called time on his career in 2017, just months after he beat MMA legend Conor McGregor in August of that year.
